EIU Biology students are in the process of starting a campus-wide green initiative and were hoping we could have support from other students. Our mission is to reduce single use plastics by implementing a phase-out program.

The initial plan is to start in the MLK Union by using alternatives for the plastic bags in the bookstore and the plastic cups in Java. We would like to utilize reusable bags, put in place reusable mugs, and charge a small fee for plastic bags and cups. As the phase-out program progresses, we want to target plastic to-go boxes in Stevenson and styrofoam to-go boxes in Taylor and Thomas with compostable to-go boxes. We would also like to get rid of plastic to go silverware and replace them with a more sustainable to go cutlery.
