Remove netting on old NatWest building, it is causing suffering & killing birds.
The Issue
Over the last 7 years the netting in place on top of the old NatWest bank in Newhaven town has caused countless suffering & long drawn out deaths for wild birds.
The netting is repeatedly causing unnecessary suffering. It also defeats the purpose of which it is used for (to prevent birds nesting & perching on the building), due to the fact it is acting as mist netting. Birds that fly over the building become entangled and trapped.
If they are not noticed by anyone this will cause a long drawn out death from starvation, dehydration and even orthostatic shock (due to hanging upside down for an extended period of time).
East Sussex Fire and Rescue have been out numerous times over the last 7 years, this then puts a strain on resources of the emergency services as they have to use the ACP to retrieve the birds, this is brought over by the Brighton crew. Each rescue requires 2 fire engines and the ACP, please bear in mind that there are only two ACP’s in East Sussex.
Wildlife rescue charities are called out, at times this is multiple occasions during a week, which again puts a strain on their resources.
We would like to petition for this netting to be removed and for measures to be made that do confirm to the standards of preventing birds landing on the building, if it is still required.
More importantly we want the unnecessary suffering to stop, it’s been going on for far too long and is still extremely upsetting.
