Save Giffnock Library

The Issue

Giffnock Library has been at the heart of the Giffnock community since it was built in the early 1980s.  There are now suggestions that it will be closed and the service be moved into a new facility to be built in Eastwood Park.  Costs of £50 million have been mentioned.

Aside from the enormous expense at a difficult time, Giffnock Library serves a vitally important community function.  Our library is more than just about borrowing books.  It serves as a meeting place, a place of relaxation and study.  It hosts community meetings and surgeries for a wide range of organisations.  Its proximity to train and bus services means that it is accessible to many.

Giffnock Library should be used more; not closed. There is a lack of community resource for young people in Giffnock, which, with a little vision, the library building could cater for.  I hear much talk of the need for a 'community hub', but little action.  Giffnock Library is the ready made answer.

This is not the time for East Renfrewshire Council to be embarking on a £50 million building project on green space in a park, while closing vital local public services.  This is the time to be careful with public money and to enhance the community resources we already have.

It is time that local councillors listened to the community they represent.  We have already saved Huntly Park.  Now it is time to save Giffnock Library.  Make your voice heard.  Please sign and share this petition.
