Andrew Cowan started this petition to East Renfrewshire Council Planning Department

A planning application has been submitted for a 20 meter (65 foot) tall ‘super-mast’ on the small area of green space between Mearns Road and Woodside Gardens, in Clarkston.

This would be an extremely tall telecommunications mast, that will rise 5 meters above the mature trees that are already on this location. Due to the sheer scale of the mast it would be visible along several neighbouring streets, including Greenwood Road, Campsie Gardens, Kilpatrick Gardens, Burnside Gardens, Highfield Drive, Lomondside Avenue and of course Woodside Gardens and Mearns Road.

The mast itself will be extremely unsightly, with exposed antenna and appliances protruding from the top of the tower. Two telecommunication masts have already been erected within a 30 meter radius of this recent application in the last several years, however these are both much smaller than this new proposal, which will be two and a half times the height of a street lamp. This will tower over surrounding homes and further create an industrialised look and feel to this area, which is an important pocket of green space for the surrounding area and local children. Trees at the proposed site may need chopped back to accommodate this mast too. The application also proposes several equipment cabinets, which will almost completely obstruct the narrow pathway here.

It appears most local residents are unaware of this new application, as the developers are clearly hoping this new mast would be approved for construction without much notice! A similar application was recently overturned in Netherlee, so it is vitally important we get as many objections to this as possible to deliver the same outcome.

The window for objections lasts until 18th February. Please sign and share this petition, and add your objection via the planning website, at www.eastrenfrewshire.gov.uk/planningonline using reference 2021/0832/PN. Every objection counts! Thank you!
