Protect the Springs from unsightly 5-story AT&T cell phone tower

Protect the Springs from unsightly 5-story AT&T cell phone tower

The Issue

Join us to implore the East Hampton Planning Board to deny a 50' cell phone tower at St. Peter's Chapel on Old Stone Highway in Springs.  AT&T (the petitioner) is actively campaigning to construct this obtrusive, dangerous and unsightly tower, a 5-story structure, against the objections of concerned neighbors and community organizations.

While the area could use improved cellular coverage, this is not the solution. This tower does not assist our emergency responders, and will only slightly improve coverage for AT&T users. The petitioner’s pattern of dismissive and disingenuous behavior is alarming given that they could be responsible for constructing an eyesore in our community.

The concerns from the neighbors and the community can be grouped into two buckets:

Visual, safety and environmental impact on the surrounding community:

  • The proposed cell phone tower is more than 2x the height of the existing chapel and completely incongruous with the surrounding residential structures
  • Neighboring homes, St. Peter’s Chapel (built in 1881), and its congregants, are located within the "Fall Zone" of the 50' tower. A “Fall Zone” is a legal boundary designed to protect the lives and safety of neighboring people and properties. The risks are especially threatening during storms.
  • The proposed 50' tower site abuts an extensive freshwater wetland; AT&T has trespassed on private property and destroyed nearby vegetation to perform “site testing”

Untrustworthy conduct of the petitioner: if the town allows AT&T to build a permanent 5-story tower on the site, they will be entering our community into a long-term agreement with a company who has already proven untrustworthy:

  • Inaccurate renderings (see image above): to disguise the visual impact of a 5-story tower on our neighborhood, the petitioner submitted deliberately inaccurate renderings which severely minimized the height, width and color of the tower
  • Feeble effort to provide required advance notice to neighbors
  • Environmental impact review not completed by an independent third-party

AT&T’s actions show a complete disregard for our community. We believe they should not be granted responsibility for building a 5-story cell tower that will mar our community forever.

An obtrusive, potentially dangerous and unsightly 50' cell phone tower should not be forcibly wedged in our community against the wishes of neighbors and the Springs community.

Do not let the potential for slightly improved cell phone service (for AT&T customers only) overwhelm the appeal and safety of our quaint area.

PLEASE help us get the word out and share this campaign with your fellow neighbors and community members. Thank you to everyone who is helping in our fight to protect the unique character and charm of our neighborhood.
