Early Operating Hours for the New Four Points YMCA to 5:00 AM
The Issue
We are excited about the opening of the new Four Points YMCA near North FM 620. As a dedicated member of the Four Points and West Austin Community, I find myself facing a challenge that many others in our area will likely share. Our work schedules, family responsibilities, and other obligations often extend into evening hours, leaving us with little recreational time at the end of the day. The only viable option for many of us is early morning exercise before we start our day.
However, with the current operating hours of many Austin-area YMCA’s starting later than desired, this option is not feasible for those who need to be tending to other obligations starting at 6-7 AM, whether it’s getting kids ready for school, preparing myself for the day, taking pets out, etc. We believe that opening at 5:00 AM (or earlier) would provide an invaluable service to members like ourselves and help spread out utilization throughout the day. In other words, having extended operating hours may make for a less congested workout for you regardless of the time of day you exercise.
Weekend hours may be more flexible but an early start would also be preferable (e.g., 7:00 AM open).
Moreover, this change could potentially alleviate traffic during peak morning rush hour as people adjust their commuting times around their gym schedule rather than hitting the road all at once. According to data from INRIX's Global Traffic Scorecard (2019), Austin ranks as one of America's most congested cities, especially during peak rush hour times, and any measure that could ease this congestion should be considered. And community members are well aware of road traffic and risks inherent to North FM 620 during peak traffic.
We understand that there may be logistical challenges associated with extending operating hours. However, we firmly believe that such changes would greatly benefit both YMCA members and our wider community here in Four Points and the surrounding neighborhoods near FM 620.
Please join us in advocating for earlier operating hours at our local YMCA – sign this petition today!
