A call to Dutch Bros Coffee for better protection and support of employees.

A call to Dutch Bros Coffee for better protection and support of employees.

The Issue

UPDATE:

If any of this applies to you and you have one or more experiences to share, *please* file a complaint with OSHA. Each complaint needs to be filed individually, so we need to have courage and believe that our voice can make difference. When you do this, please be thorough and specific. Channel your pain into a well-worded and thoughtful message that is most likely to make a positive difference. There is great power in numbers.

No matter how small or long ago it was, each one shows evidence of a pattern and that will be immensely helpful.

I've heard nothing back from HQ, so this is likely to be one of the only ways to ensure that we're heard and the things that happened to us do not happen to others. The link is: https://www.osha.gov/workers/file_complaint.html

3 days ago, I spent over 12 hours writing a condensed version of my 5-year experience at Dutch Bros Coffee. I didn't use their name or the names of people involved, but now it's unavoidable to prevent confusion and false signatures. I want to make it extremely clear that I'm not saying the entire company is bad, but the actions (and inactions) of some leaders need to be addressed and corrected for the safety and well-being of their employees.

I could have written so much more in my post, but I was already afraid that no one would take the time to read it. Still, I hoped that it would help people with experiences similar to my own. I struggled to post it, afraid of the potential fallout and backlash. To my surprise and relief, I woke to a shocking number of supportive replies and private messages. Many people opened up in private with their own experiences, experiences they have continued to carry with them because they thought they were alone or that no one would listen.

I already knew I wasn't the only one with experiences similar to my own, but I didn't know that so many of them were just as traumatic or even worse than my own; and I certainly didn't expect there to be so many of us. The comments, shares, and private messages continued all day and they haven't stopped. I began to realize that this was just the tip of the iceberg. Employees that left 5 years ago had experiences which were nearly identical to those who work there today--people that have never met or worked together. Feedback was offered, but it fell on deaf ears--often leading to feelings of isolation and crippling self-doubt. It's clear from the timing of these experiences that this has been going on for many years and it isn't going away. So many employees are still working in a culture of fear, abuse, and favoritism.

I felt suddenly forced into a stressful dilemma: drop all of this, save myself from an incredible amount of stress, and try to move on; or take the pain that people felt and turn it into something positive.

I strive to inspire change without causing drama our trouble for the good people working there. We merely endeavor to prevent more people from enduring the same experiences and ensure that feedback is neither discouraged nor ignored. I have reached out to their headquarters because I want to give them a fair chance to accept and address the widespread harm caused by some leaders within the company--directly or indirectly.

The company does many wonderful things and there are amazing people working there. Those people do not deserve to suffer, so we're hoping that Dutch Bros Coffee will listen to our cries for help and do the right thing for the sake of their employees.

To help make a difference for current and future employees of Dutch Bros Coffee, we're calling on anyone that has ever felt ignored, unheard, treated unfairly, silenced, afraid, traumatized, abused, asked to do something that made them feel uncomfortable, made to feel less than equal by leadership, or witnessed any of this at Dutch Bros Coffee. Please sign this petition and share it.

You are not alone. This doesn't have to continue and we can make a difference.

To those leaders at Dutch Bros Coffee who are innocent, amazing, and strive to make it a wonderful place to work: We appreciate you so much and hope you will support this movement to help those you cannot reach or protect.
