Helena Building (NYC): New & Unreasonable Pet Policy Revision Request

The Issue

Dear Durst Organization Leadership,

As the result of the newly adopted and unexpectedly extreme pet policy, customers/clients/residents of the Helena building are truly beside themselves with disbelief. The Helena has successfully established itself as a pet-friendly building, and since its resurrection has been a wonderful place to live with our pets...until now. Paying residents are now forced to enter/exit the building numerous times a day through the service entrance, which will indeed impede the Porters in their daily duties. There are numerous reasons this makes the residents feel as though this is unreasonable, not to mention unsafe: Garage space holders can not access the garage from the building with their pets, the unmonitored/dark service entrance make residents a criminal target in the night time hours, and more.

The current residents of the Helena building wish to have Leadership revise the pet policy to allow leashed dogs to enter/exit the lobby under direct supervision. The proposal entails all dogs be leashed, animals to no longer relieve themselves within 50 feet of the entrance/exit area on W. 57th Street, and no animal/owner combos will linger in the lobby.

We believe this a fare compromise that will allow current and future residents to cohabitate with all humans who enter the building, without causing issue and disrupting the lives of paying tenants. With many current long time tenants of the Helena willing to take legal action to terminate their lease, or not renew, we truly hope Durst Leadership hears our plea.
