Why this petition matters

Started by Drew Bailey

Disc golf is one of the fastest growing sports world wide.  The game is played with small frisbees, commonly referred to as discs. Players navigate trees and terrain to attempt to throw their discs into a disc catcher.  They attempt to do this in the fewest possible throws. (Hence, the similarity to golf). However, there are some key differences, disc golf uses current terrain and foliage as obstacles to shape your shot around, thus preserving and mitigating environmental impact. Additionally, there is no need for extensive grass irrigation and fertilization, further reducing maintenance costs and environmental concerns.  It truly is an outdoor sport that preserves the outdoors.

Because one throws discs, courses are much smaller than ball golf and are best suited to elevation changes that typically dissuade the majority of land uses.

The new hydro corridor, just south of the 401 has a number of excellent sites to consider. With costs in the 1000 to 2000 dollars a hole and minimal yearly maintenance Durham should be interested in this sport as it promotes active participation and would have possitive economic implications as well.

Durham only has one Disc Golf course that is open year round. It is also a pay to play course. Municipalities around us all have free to play courses. Including Nestleton, Lindsay, and Toronto. The disc golf community is growing and the region needs to be a part of this lifelong sport that can be played year round. Please sign and support this.
