Durham City Council: vote YES on the progressive $1.3 million arts funding proposal!

Durham City Council: vote YES on the progressive $1.3 million arts funding proposal!
The Issue
Durham is changing very fast. As a result, its famous indie arts scene is in danger--especially the community of artists of color and POC-serving organizations that made the city such a desirable place to live in the first place. Unlike its peer cities, Durham only funds a few large arts venues rather than independent artists. If the people of Durham want their city to remain a place where independent art and artists thrive, they must urge the city to change course now.
Last year, twenty-five local artists addressed Durham City Council about the crisis of independent arts funding. That speaker series led to a proposal for a $1.3 million direct granting fund for local artists and arts organizations, designed to address racial equity above all. The link to the full proposal is here. The proposal has received enthusiastic support from the two proposed partner organizations, the Hayti Heritage Center and the Durham Arts Council; as well as an endorsement from IndyWeek and a unanimous recommendation from the Durham Cultural Advisory Board.
We need at least four City Council Members to vote YES on this proposal for it to be approved for the 2021-2022 budget currently under consideration. If and only if you are a resident of Durham, please sign this petition to show the Council your support for the proposal. Thank you!
