Most people are aware of the multi-million dollar language-education platform, Duolingo, allowing for universal language study for free. Although the quality of education is wonderful, mostly well-known languages are available for study. This leaves less-common, potentially endangered languages to fend for themselves.

One of these is Lithuanian, a language originating from Lithuania, a Baltic country. I am of half-Lithuanian ancestry, so my connection to the language is understandable. But my lineage has empowered me to spread knowledge about this country, and preserve it.

Increasing representation in a declining country. Over the last 25 years, Lithuania's population has decreased by 25%, causing it to be one of the most rapidly decreasing populations in the world. In addition, tourism rates are low. Part of this is because Lithuania lacks representation globally, meaning Lithuania is not a well-known country. A Duolingo course would bring knowledge of this country to a global platform, and thus increasing tourism rates, as well as interest in Lithuania -- its cuisine, rich culture, gothic-neoclassical Renaissance-inspired architecture, one of the world's oldest languages, resilience during the Soviet occupation, and much more. Having more speakers of Lithuanian can prevent it from becoming endangered, or even extinct.

Increasing language resource availability. Although I am privileged to attend an extracurricular Lithuanian-language school, there is only one in my state and is limited to those who have some Lithuanian heritage. Those who may have some connection to Lithuania, but don't have the time, finance, or proximity to take a Lithuanian course, are currently out of luck -- satisfactory Lithuanian resources are very limited, both online and in-person, which restricts deep knowledge about the culture and language of Lithuania. A Duolingo course is versatile -- members can choose how much they want to learn per day, anywhere, and for free, as opposed to a traditional course.

A tightly-knit community that would love to help. While Lithuanian is a less-common language, there are still many very-qualified instructors of Lithuania who would be willing to contribute to a Lithuanian course (translate words, explain grammatical rules, pronounce words, etc.) In this Duolingo forum alone, there is a multitude of people who would deeply support the making of a Duolingo course.

You have a voice. By signing this petition, you are helping a language and nation become represented more sufficiently by raising attention to the request of a Lithuanian course on Duolingo! Thank you, and ačiū!
