Donate leftover donuts and pastries to homeless shelters at the end of the night

The Issue

According to the 2013 Annual Homeless Assessment Report (AHAR) presented to Congress by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in November, nearly 64,000 people, including 22,000 children, were considered homeless in New York City. Along with this, according to feedingamerica.org, 1 in 7 New Yorkers struggle with hunger. City Harvest is the only food rescue program in New York City. They focus on collecting prepared and perishable food that would be wasted and then transport this donated food immediately, free of charge to soup kitchens and other emergency food programs throughout the city.

At the end of every night each Dunkin' Donuts store is allowed to dispose of leftovers however they wish, and since throwing out leftovers is often the easiest thing to do this results in thousands of wasted donuts end pasties every night just in New York City alone. I believe that it's wrong to deprive people in need of food that Dunkin' Donuts can no longer sell. Instead, Dunkin' Donuts should direct their branches to donate leftovers to City Harvest. Donating to City Harvest is as easy as placing leftovers in their provided plastic bags and scheduling a pick-up time, which would not cost Dunkin' Donuts any extra time or money.

I decided to start this petition because I have seen first hand Dunkin' Donuts give away and even throw out dozens of donuts at a time, and at the store closest to my house I once saw an employee give a box of leftover donuts to a homeless person before he left work. After seeing this it made me think about all the wasted food, and why it wasn't being donated.

Please sign this petition to convince Dunkin' Donuts to donate their leftovers to City Harvest, thank you.
