Children’s Centres, because every child matters…
Children’s Centres are all about narrowing the gap for unborn babies and their families, ensuring their opportunities to grow, experience, learn and thrive are equal. Support is available for families from the ante-natal stage right through to children age five.
Dudley Metropolitan Borough Council is proposing to make huge cuts to Children’s Centres. The Children’s Centre budget is relatively small compared to those of many other Directorates across the borough but the proposal is to halve this already limited budget, closing seven of Dudley’s twenty Centres and making nine Centres un-staffed Satellite Centres with four Children’s Centre Hubs providing only limited services.
The council proposes to make Queen Victoria Children’s Centre a Satellite Centre.
This will destroy the entire ethos of Queen Victoria Children’s Centre; an open door policy with friendly staff, forming a committed and hard working team who are passionate about the services they provide for the families in the community, on hand between 8.00am and 6.00pm five days a week. Families may simply need a friendly face, a listening ear, advice or they could be in severe crisis.
The services provided by Queen Victoria Children’s Centre and Wrap-Around day care are invaluable to the families of the Sedgley community and surrounding areas. As well as Wrap-Around day care rated as ‘OUTSTANDING’ by Ofsted, the Centre offers antenatal sessions and midwife appointments, baby massage classes, breast feeding support, a twins group, Baby Signing, Baby Talk and Small Talk to help parents and carers communicate and learn with their little ones, healthy eating, cooking and exercise programmes, Citizen’s Advice Bureau clinics as well as groups helping with the smooth transition for three year olds starting nursery at the Centre’s partner Primary schools. These services are just a fraction of the family support services and provision on offer.
Queen Victoria Children’s Centre is also Dudley’s flagship for the Family Links Parenting Programme, helping families get the most from family life, teaching life-long techniques for coping with the normal pressures of family life, building self-worth and self-esteem, dealing with conflict and enjoying those early years of parenthood which are all too soon gone.
Families have described their Children’s Centre as a ‘life-line’ saying they don’t know what they would have done without the support they received.
Children’s Centre staff work directly with parents, carers and children enabling them to be the eyes, ears and pathways to their partners; Health Visitors, Social Workers, Midwives etc.
Everyone deserves the option of extra help when raising a family; there is no handbook but Children’s Centres are a vital support mechanism.
“Thank you to everyone at the Children’s Centre for all your hard work and perseverance. We appreciate all the work you all do and you are a big part of our lives and making it better.”
