Drop The Charges Against Broderick Dunlap and Yoselin Saucedo

Drop The Charges Against Broderick Dunlap and Yoselin Saucedo

The Issue

In 2020, Broderick and Yoselin attended a protest to show their support for an unarmed young man who was wrongfully shot and mistreated by Rialto police officer, Michael Babineuax. Only minutes after Broderick arrived to the protest, police officers attacked and assaulted him unprovoked. He and Yoselin, who is disabled, were initially arrested without knowing their charges.

Six of the twelve arrested protestors were charged. All six of those protesters were either members of the Black Power Collective IE (formerly Black Lives Matter Inland Empire Chapter) community organization, or had previously attended organizing meetings. One protestor, facing nearly a decade of prison time, was found not guilty. Another protestor was found guilty and sentenced to a year of probation where they were unable to be in possession of chalk. After it being dragged out for four years, two of them are still fighting their charges in Pomona, CA: Yoselin Cristina Saucedo and Broderick Dunlap.

District Attorney Samantha Abraham:

We strongly urge you to drop the charges against Broderick Dunlap and Yoselin Saucedo. These upstanding, highly educated citizens have always made supporting and uplifting their communities a priority!  They do not deserve to be prosecuted for advocating for Lawrence Bender, a man who was wrongfully shot and mistreated by the Rialto police department, as evidenced by the sizable settlement Mr. Bender received.

Broderick holds a Bachelor's degree in History from La Sierra University, and Master's degrees in African American Studies from UCLA and in History from Johns Hopkins University. He is currently a Ph.D. candidate in History at Johns Hopkins.

Yoselin is a mother of two with an MFA from UC Riverside. She established education-based collectives that provided resources for people without housing. At UCR, she developed her teaching philosophy through the University Teaching Certificate program.

Their community involvement ranges from feeding over 1,000 people during a one-day event to providing education and resources to their fellow community members.

Broderick and Yoselin deserve to be commended for striving to make their community a better place, not punished.

Again, we strongly urge you to drop the charges and end this four-year-long conflict they’ve had to endure.
