"DROP THE ACT" - Raising Awareness Around Mental Health Protocols

The Issue

Between 2020 - 2025 I endured unjudicious incidents within front line services.

It resulted in my voice not being heard and health requirements not being addressed; primarily due to how information is obtained, shared and secured; the education and acumen of some professionals and limited support available for service users, professionals and wider connections of said people when such matters occur.

On the first occasion in Kent, detained for over three months, I received one thirty-minute weekly consultation with consultants restricted by work hours and ward capacity; and had a support network faulty influenced and faced unforeseen challenges when attempts were made to vocalise actual health symptoms and experiences.

The second admission by law came with greater knowledge of the immediate need for legal representation when these incidents occur. This happened in Luton & Dunstable.

Current health legislation combined with limitations to the implementation of procedures in place to shield service users and employees, resulted in a miscarriage of justice, tainted reputations and a continued ripple effect as I continued with everyday life afterwards.

Health and welfare interventions are integrated within some catchment areas, so the origin of these detention and encounters with secondary services must be questioned and impugned.

Some localities, unlike others, are still able to implement and take advantage of health institutionalisation; so the time has come to call for change in this particular area of law; and strive to reform the Mental Health Act, or better still, operate towards an all-encompassing Health Act.

Making use of contemporary and varied means of recording information during assessments, would ensure information and presentations are accurately interpreted and widely understood, alongside feeding into further education and training.

Altering terminology in published legislation and implemented policies which identifies and refers to groups of people with diagnosis', will lift stereotypes and stigmas overtime.

At present, specialist Doctors within mental healthcare have the power to detain service users without a trial or tribunal, for a substantial length of time. Furthermore, dated treatment is forced upon those admitted by law, despite there being no risk to myself or others present (800mg of anti-psychotics in my case). It is alarmingly common for service users who consume the treatment available via public health services to experience severe, life altering side effects.

Having the privilege of growing-up in a developed country (a marketing and entertainment haven!), attention must be drawn to how techniques may unintentionally blossom side effects; shaping and impacting mental processing and behaviours of service users and others involved.

Since 2020, health and wider public services in Denbighshire, Conwy, Islington, Lewisham, Haringey, Camden, Maidstone, West Yorkshire, Glastonbury, St Sampson, Luton, Liverpool, The Wirral, Lytham Saint Annes and Blackpool (plus the surroundings) have been affected and this has ironically had a significant impact on my health, employment, finances and social groups.

Understandably these experiences have brought political views and training within educational institutions to the forefront, therefore, I would love your support in ensuring my harmless, innocent yet 'spirited' and 'nutty' ways are not mistaken for needs warranting a lawful admission, detention and subsequent legally imposed treatment. Ensuring records are accurate and secure so appropriate treatment can be granted is paramount at this stage (medicinal cannabis), alongside a meeting with the Department for Health and Police & Crime Commissioners.

Thank you for taking the time to read and sign this petition.
