Dress code policy

Dress code policy
The Issue
The current dress code negatively affects students who rely on hooded jackets for comfort, warmth, and convenience. Jackets with hoods are practical for cold, rainy, or windy weather, and prohibiting them leaves students ill-prepared for these conditions. Many students also feel that being restricted from wearing hoods creates unnecessary stress, as hooded jackets are among the most commonly owned outerwear. The issue especially impacts those who may not have the financial means to purchase multiple styles of outerwear to meet specific dress
If the ban on hooded jackets continues, students will remain uncomfortable & continue to violate the dress code in acts to fight against this dress code policy.which can distract from their ability to focus on learning. Additionally, this rule can create tension between students and staff when enforcement is prioritized over education. Allowing hooded jackets—with the stipulation that hoods may not be worn up unless being outdoors(off campus) —ensures practicality without undermining classroom professionalism or safety. Updating this policy fosters trust and understanding between the administration and students, promoting a more positive school culture.
The need for this change is urgent as colder months are here, and students are already facing the daily challenge of staying warm without violating dress code rules. Hooded jackets are a universal and affordable clothing option that align with students’ needs. Revising the policy now would address these concerns in real time, demonstrating that the school values practical solutions and is responsive to its community. This change would signal that student well-being and fairness are priorities, paving the way for a more inclusive environment.
We respectfully request that Dr. Williams and the school administration update the dress code to permit hooded jackets under clear guidelines, as well as allow leggings, ensuring all students can dress comfortably, appropriately, and ready to succeed.
