DreamWorks: Cast a Woman of Japansese Descent to Play Motoko Kusanagi
The Issue
DreamWorks is in the process of adapting the animated Japanese movie The Ghost in the Shell (1995). It has recently been revealed that they have cast Scarlett Johansson to play the Japanese female protagonist Motoko Kusanagi. This is not right! This a blatant form of Hollywood whitewashing whether they noticed it or not. Not only that, but they have been working on creating special effects to make their characters "look more Asian." People attempt to justify DreamWorks actions by claiming that DreamWorks is compensating by trying to make the best casting choices by bringing recognizable actors who have experience in the action movie field, or by trying to get all the costume and culture correctly. But the real question is, why spend money on attempted to yellow-face a caucasian woman when you can do the easier and respectful (proper, just, and moral) choice and cast a Japanese woman to play a Japanese character.
Many of Japanese descent have already agreed to not watch the movie because not only is it disrespectful, but because this movie was also a part of their childhood, it was more than that as well. The original manga and movie/anime revolved around the changes and advances of the Japanese culture. DreamWorks should not attempt to Westernize a movie that was not made, nor should it be allowed, to be Westernized. The Ghost in the Shell is a marker of Japanese history in the entertainment field, to recognize Japanese culture.
DreamWorks should do the right thing and recast a far more appropriate choice. The should cast women of Japanese descent to play Motoko Kusanagi. As mentioned by another petition: DreamWorks should "use this opportunity to help talented Asian-American actors receive recognition for their work. There are so few opportunities for them to shine in Hollywood, and this film would be a perfect platform"
