Dragged, Beaten, Dumped: Ireland’s Animals Deserve Better. ACT NOW

Dragged, Beaten, Dumped: Ireland’s Animals Deserve Better. ACT NOW
The Issue
Animals across Ireland are being beaten, dumped, and destroyed — while the very system meant to protect them is collapsing.
We, the undersigned, are calling on the Irish Government, the Minister for Justice, and the Minister for Agriculture to take urgent, meaningful action to end the cruelty and restore accountability.
We demand immediate implementation of the following:
1. Establish a Garda-led Animal Welfare Crime Unit
2. Close loopholes that allow unregulated, large-scale dog breedin
3. Appoint a National Director of Animal Welfare with real authority
4. Expand national enforcement beyond the two DAFM-authorised officers
5. Launch a national public education campaign to expose the links between animal cruelty, domestic violence, and organised crime
Every day in Ireland, animals suffer while cruelty goes unchecked — and the consequences ripple far beyond animal welfare:
Horses driven at speed down national roads — collapsing from exhaustion or struck in traffic. Dogs bred to the brink, then dumped like rubbish when no longer profitable. Back yard breeding. Cats abandoned or used as bait in the dark, violent world of dog fighting.
Dogs, cats, and horses starved, beaten, or sold through anonymous apps — fueling a cruel trade in suffering.
Ponies beaten, no respect for the law, no consequences — and if this is where violence begins, what comes next?
Behind this cruelty is a darker truth:
Animal abuse is increasingly linked to organized crime, domestic violence, and escalating public harm.
Ø Dog fighting and illegal breeding aren’t just animal issues — they attract weapons, drugs, and money laundering.
Ø Animal abuse in the home is often the first red flag in cycles of coercive control and family violence.
Ø And Gardaí remain stuck — unclear mandates, no specialist units, and no resources.
Ø Rescue charities are stretched beyond capacity.
Ø The law is strong on paper, but toothless in practice.
And Ireland is falling behind……
This is not just about animals. This is about law, safety, and decency.
We need a national strategy that treats animal cruelty as a serious criminal issue — not a side note.
We must act now.
Please sign and share this petition. Add your voice to the growing call for real reform, real enforcement, and real compassion.
Because if we can’t protect the voiceless, what kind of country are we?
