Joyce Neverov started this petition to Dr. Scott Brabrand

Most FCPS High School graduations are approximately 100 days away. FCPS Superintendent Dr. Scott Brabrand is reportedly still planning for the Class of 2021 High School Graduations to be held at George Mason University’s EagleBank Arena without a comprehensive plan B in case of COVID-19 related contingencies.

As of today, March 1, 2021, Governor Northam’s amended Executive Order 72 (on COVID-19 policy) states “the total number of spectators for indoor venues cannot exceed the lesser of 30 percent of the lowest occupancy load on the certificate of occupancy, if applicable, or 250 persons.”

While it is possible that the Governor will increase these limits by early June 2021, when most graduations are scheduled to take place, he would have to increase occupancy limits significantly (closer to 2,000 persons or 8 times the current capacity numbers) to allow for graduating seniors, two parents or guardians, and faculty and staff to attend these events.

By signing this petition, you are asking Dr. Brabrand and his staff to prepare contingency plans for locally hosted outdoor graduation ceremonies, on school grounds, in the event Governor Northam does not increase gathering limits sufficiently to accommodate indoor graduation ceremonies at EagleBank Arena.

In either event, all graduation ceremonies should be live-streamed and recorded for remote viewing for those who are high risk or unable to attend.

The petition also calls on Dr. Brabrand to publicly announce such plans no later than April 15, 2021. Solely virtual or drive-through graduations should not be the default for this year if EagleBank is not an option due to a lack of advance planning.
