The Issue

We created this petition to keep the Song program at Chino Hills High School alive! This program has a long history of success representing Chino Hills High School at sporting events, community outreach, promoting school spirit and performing on the competition floor.  To absolve this program completely under the assumption that these girls are dancers and have the dance team as a viable and reasonable option is wrong.  Why ruin a 10+ year successful program? They are NOT just dancers. Eliminating the Song team not only affects the girls but the spirit of the school too and we need change now! Please sign and share with others!

The Chino Hills High Dance team and the Chino Hills Song team have existed competing at the highest national level in harmony, allowing for technically trained career dancers to showcase their talents and still having a home for more girls to pursue a love of dance while spreading school spirit and representing their school from the sidelines.  The Song team has been an integral part of the spirit-leader program at Chino Hills High School for years.  There is no reason to eliminate a program which has given so many student leaders a place to call home.  Administration states that they are trying to create a more inclusive environment and acting in the best interests of the students.  How does eliminating options and removing opportunities achieve positive results for students?

Traditions of school spirit and a nationally ranked Song team will disappear if the Chino Hills High School Song team is eliminated. Many of the girls on the Song team are not studio trained. This puts them at a disadvantage at tryouts.  After a “resignation" by the long standing advisor/coach Brian Jones, the Spiritleader program under the control of administration has fallen apart due to their inexperience and lack of understanding on just how successful the Song/Cheer Spiritleader program really is.

Here are a few accomplishments from just the Song team in the past 4 years:

  • Fight Song National Champions USA Spirit Nationals (Cheer & Song)
  • Fight Song National Runner Up 2018
  • J.V. Song USA Regional 2X champions For the Southern California Classic

According to a document found on Varsity.com (the parent company of USA Competitions for dance, Cheer and Song) "Song/Pom teams are a part of a Spirit program. They cheer at games with cheerleaders on the sidelines, so their first priority is to support the school (the same as cheerleaders). Songleaders not only do cheers on the sidelines, but they also perform routines on the sidelines, during time-outs, half-time and rallies. The main style that Songleaders are known to perform is Pom, but they also perform other styles that are typical to be seen in a game environment (hip hop, jazz, novelty).

Fun Facts:

  • The Chino Hills High Song team is one of only a few public schools dominated by private schools in their national competition circuit.
  • The Song team serves and performs for several outreach opportunities in the community like the Let It Be 5k, Isaiah's Rock Food Bank, Calif. Department of Education STEAM Symposium, Special Olympics, Junior Spirit Camps, St. Margaret Mary Church Toy Drive in addition to supporting many of the school events like Athlete signing day, pep rallys, football, basketball, volleyball, water polo and on and on.
  • Many of the Spiritleaders are non-studio trained!

As you can see, the Song team is about much more than just dance. They do not exist to just perform a routine. The program provides opportunity to those who can’t dance at the level of the dance team. They are representatives of the school, serve their school, promote, encourage and embody school spirit, participate in community outreach events, compete at a national level and are an all around group of wholehearted girls.

Dr. Buoncristiani and Dr. Enfield, we urge you to recall your decision in absolving the Song team.  As a reminder, the surrounding CVUSD schools have separate Song and Dance teams which are successful in their own right. Why separate this Song Program now when it has been successful for the last 10 years?
