Stop speeding in the Kruger National park

Stop speeding in the Kruger National park

The Issue

The Kruger National park in South Africa which is home to many endangered species currently has a speed limit of 50km/hr on tar roads and 40km/ hr on gravel roads. The roads are used by tourists, parks staff and delivery vehicles. Speeding has become a massive problem culminating in a cheetah, a rare and endangered animal being run over and  killed in September 2021. Prior to this a giraffe was hit by a speeding motorist resulting in it being flung into a nearby tourist vehicle killing one of the occupants. Despite this and despite reports of vehicles constantly breaking the speed limit nothing is currently being done to prevent the situation. We the undersigned call on SANparks to actively make an effort to prevent speeding.

We ask that speed traps be used on routes that are commonly abused by speeding drivers.

We ask that appropriate fines and punishment such as banning from the park be used as a deterrent.

We ask that all companies delivering goods to the park be informed of the severity of them breaking this rule.

We ask that SANparks staff be made aware that they will lose their jobs if they are caught speeding. The staff may drive at 65km/hr but only in a real emergency.

We ask that day visitor sites be closed at an appropriate time to allow these visitors to exit the closest gate without breaking the speed limit.

The Kruger National park’s animal are facing enough threat from poachers, they do not need to fear for their lives because of speeding motorists. Additionally speeding may easily result in human causalities as has already happened. This change cannot be brought about quickly enough.
