end the racist “Hawaiian Day” at Shenendhowa Schools
The Issue
Every year at Shen High School students participate in spirit week which includes the extremely offensive cultural appropriation that is “Hawaiian Day”. Students dress in floral shirts, sunglasses, cheap hula, and cheap flower necklaces. This is an appropriation of the culture that was robbed by white Americans. Native Hawaiians were punished for practicing their culture and had to do it in secret. For white kids and non Hawaiians who go to a school that is on stolen land, named after tribes who were mistreated by their ancestors, to go on to use the Hawaiian culture as a costume and a Spirit Day is a disgrace.
This petition is to reach out to Oliver Robinson, superintendent of Shenendehowa, in order to end this gross, cheap joke that is the appropriation of Hawaiian and native culture.
