In the Wake County Public School System, middle school students have a period in the day called homeroom or as some know it, Exploratory Enrichment. In this period students must do Dreambox and ReadTheory, or something of that nature. This takes away from time students could be working on grades that impact their future. During school, we have 15 mins to do the assigned work, named independent practice at Ligon Middle School. This is not enough time for the work assigned and for most students, including my self, we must work outside of our school day. For people who are Virtual Academy, they won't have a change in the schedule, for it is what Wake County assigned. Some of my peers are working up to 5 hours on this school work that is supposed to be quick enough that we finish during the 15 mins we are given. We feel as though homeroom should be a time to catch up on work and not do mindless busywork. While there are some important things we do in homeroom like Social Emotion Learning or SEL we only do this once a week at Ligon Middle. We feel as though if there were two days of SEL and the rest were days where we do work and can email teachers for help and other important things. If Wake County thinks that having a Google Meet, Zoom Meet, etc. We feel as though a good compromise for this period is letting us have the meet while we do work, similar to In-Person School. We hope that we can come to an agreement with WCPSS. - The students of WCPSS
