Separation by Grade Level at Marvin Ridge High School

Separation by Grade Level at Marvin Ridge High School

The Issue

In the upcoming Fall 2020-2021 Semester, UCPS High School Students are planning on following a daily rotational schedule. The schedule is being split up in cohorts by last names. As in: A-D attend on Monday, E-K attend on Tuesday, L-Q attend on Wednesday, and R-Z attend on Thursday, with all students doing remote learning on Fridays. The UCPS Board of Education, saw this as every effort to keep siblings and members of the same household together throughout the duration of the semester.

But as a senior attending Marvin Ridge High School,  I cannot help but disagree with this plan of action. Separating the students in this manner will not only change our learning environment further, but also have a huge impact on students mental health. Students create their strongest bonds during their high school years and implementing this form of protection will affect students greatly being separated from their peers.

I and many of my peers that attend high school agree that we’d rather be separated by our grade levels rather than last names. As seniors, this is one thing that we ask of you being that our final year of high school is already actively being torn away by this pandemic. I hope this will reach our superiors and they will implement change for our whole county.
