In December 2024, without community consultation, the City of Toronto announced 6 permanent shelter locations being built throughout the city to address the rise in homelessness. The vacant lot at 1220 Wilson Ave was identified by the city, even though there is already a shelter located just down the street at 1677 Wilson Ave.

CONCERN FOR CHILDREN’S SAFETY
1220 Wilson Ave is located right between a daycare centre and a school. There is another daycare across the street, and 11 schools in the immediate area within walking distance.  Our community is very residential with numerous schools and community centre.

Map of vulnerable locations:

Obviously, someone didn't do their homework!

It is proven that introducing a homeless shelter results in an increase in crime rates, including break-ins, violent assaults, disorderly conduct, rampant drug activity and establishment of illegal encampments that create safety risks on their own.

Community members have already shared their concerns about the shelter at 1677 Wilson Ave. These concerns include drug dealing, crime, and disorderly behaviours. Families have expressed safety concerns about children playing outside and in parks in the area due to syringes and other drug paraphernalia, and businesses have been negatively affected.

TAKE ACTION AND SIGN THE PETITION
By signing this petition, you are urging the City of Toronto to RELOCATE this proposed shelter to an alternative location, one that both addresses gaps in services for this vulnerable population and keeps children safe.

Downsview is already supporting the unhoused community. Sign this petition, share with your community, and help to make a difference.

Thank you for your support!
