Downingtown STEM Academy Class of 2021 started this petition to Downingtown STEM Academy and

STEM’s Administration is removing senior quotes from this year’s yearbook.

Senior quotes are an incredibly important opportunity for students to express themselves, their beliefs, their achievements, or their personalities. Each student has an opportunity to put a personal statement in the yearbook that everyone will see for years to come, and will serve as a reminder of our high school peers far into the future. These quotes are not only a way for seniors to leave their mark, but also show underclassmen the wit, vibrancy, and integrity of their older classmates.

Taking senior quotes out of the yearbook is not only misguided, but an insult to a class that has had some of the most exciting senior traditions taken away from them due to COVID-19. Removing senior quotes rips away the opportunity for every senior to put a personal touch in the yearbook, because without senior quotes, those who aren’t featured in superlatives or articles will just be another face on the page without any reference to who they are as a person.

School administrators believe that these quotes are “problematic” or “inappropriate.” If that’s the case, why not place more regulations on what quotes go into the yearbook? Do pop culture references, funny sayings, or historical quotes really harm anyone, or is it just a way to limit the expression of students? Students should be free to put any quote they want so long as it is appropriate and doesn’t insult anyone.

STEM administration claims to care about seniors and students overall, but clearly only seeks to put out an image of perfection led by strict conformity. Taking away senior quotes won’t accomplish anything— it only hurts students who have already had so much taken away by the circumstances of the present.

Sign and share this petition to urge administration that senior quotes should absolutely NOT be taken away, and please send an email to administration (or encourage your parents to) in order to directly express our thoughts to those who have made this unfair decision.
