Time to Regulate the Ungovernable & Unsafe E-Hailing Industry: Uber, Bolt & Indriver!

Time to Regulate the Ungovernable & Unsafe E-Hailing Industry: Uber, Bolt & Indriver!
The Issue
My name is Melithemba, I am one of the first Uber drivers in the country. I am also the brother of recently murdered 28yrs old Bolt driver, and Law graduate, Euston Mnguni.
My family and I have made a descent living through me being an Uber, and Bolt driver and fleet owner. I financially supported my brother throughout his law studies while driving for Uber, and when he, in turn, tried to further his studies for his honors degree and also earn an honest living by driving for Uber unfortunately he was banned on Uber & ended up driving for Bolt.
On the 24th of March he was gunned down around 2pm on his second trip of the day. The irony is that I forbade my brother from driving for Bolt because of the dangers involved. However out of desperation he took up the job in secret. My brother was found by the police - shot dead in Midrand - by hijackers who posed as Bolt passengers, took a ride with him and shot him at the end of the trip.
This tragedy should never have happened! For too long e-hailing giants like Uber and Bolt have continued to operate unregulated. They are not held accountable for the safety of their drivers or passengers, for that matter. They are not accountable for allowing criminals onto their platform - the same ones who ended my brother’s life. They are also not accountable for the criminals that they approve as drivers on their platform. If this lack of accountability to the South African public, and to their own drivers and passengers, is to be brought to an end, the following must take place:
- President Ramaphosa must urgently sign the Transport Amendment Bill [B7-2016] into law.
- Bolt including all other e-hailing App companies must screen, (verify) their drivers & passengers as per the E-hailing Partners Council "EPCO" industry Benchmark.
- The e-hailing industry must fall under the regulation of the Department of Transport.
Please sign and share this petition to ensure the safety of all South Africans using e-hailing services (whether as drivers or passengers) let's save lives! "Enough is enough!”
