Carla Danesh started this petition to Dorset County Council (Environmental Health) and

What would you do if a large building development put your child's health at risk? You would do everything in your power to make the site safe to protect them. This is the situation parents face in Swanage, who have children at Little Birds Pre-school. Parents are seriously concerned about the Barratt Homes development in Northbrook Road where 90 new houses will be constructed next door to Little Birds Pre-school.

The pre-school building is within a few feet of the site. Parents are demanding that Barratts implement two measures:

1. Build either an earth bund, a barrier made of earth, or a robust and high green screen to mitigate any pollution like dust and debris whilst the building work continues

2. Plant trees to stop children being viewed from the houses as a safeguarding measure.

We want to protect our children's little lungs from the sand, chemicals and other potentially toxic particles that will be blown across. This is even more important because of the aftermath of the pandemic. Children across the country are suffering from coughs, colds and chest infections which are making them more vulnerable to viral wheezes that can seriously affect their breathing.

We are also concerned about the activity of Barratt's vehicles and machinery as well as the inevitable sound pollution that will disturb our children's play and learning.

We are shocked, dismayed and appalled that Barrett Homes have not been instructed to put safety measures in place to protect the toddlers and children at both Little Birds and St Mary's Primary School. Dorset County Council's guide for planning applications specifically states the public cannot comment on "problems arising from the construction period of any works, e.g. noise, dust, construction vehicles, hours of work etc." We are talking about the health of young children who would be vulnerable to breathing in particles from the building site. Removing the public's right to comment on these issues is a denial of freedom of speech.

The council have been irresponsible and short-sighted; they have allowed Barratt Homes to assume they could start work without erecting a protective barrier. Barratt Homes have been clear: they believe that building the first row of houses next to Little Birds is an adequate barrier. This is wrong and unacceptable. This is not a replacement for an earth bung which will keep our children safe. We are also calling for a row of trees to be planted to obstruct the view from the houses to safeguard our children. The parents believe that an earth bung and also a row of trees should have been a condition of the planning application. This demonstrates serious mismanagement by the council. Please sign our petition and help us to stop Barratt Homes from putting our children at risk.
