Donate fast food leftovers to the homeless

The Issue

Each day, millions of pounds of perfectly good food end up in landfills, instead of nourishing those who are most in need. As a society, we are facing a critical issue where edible surplus from fast food outlets is wasted, when it could be a lifeline for the homeless communities struggling with hunger. It is time to change that narrative and turn waste into a resource.

In the United States alone, it is estimated that over 30% of the food supply is wasted annually. According to the USDA, around 133 billion pounds of food, worth approximately $161 billion, goes uneaten. While this massive loss occurs, over 560,000 people experienced homelessness on a single night in 2020, according to the National Alliance to End Homelessness. This stark contrast emphasizes the urgent need for an efficient system to redirect surplus food to where it's needed most.

We propose that fast food chains implement a structured program to donate their leftover food to local shelters and food banks. By creating partnerships with these organizations, fast food restaurants can play a crucial role in reducing food waste, combating homelessness, and nourishing those who are most vulnerable. France and Italy have already seen success with similar initiatives, highlighting that such programs are not only feasible but incredibly effective in addressing both food waste and hunger.

An additional benefit of this initiative is the positive impact on the environment. The Environmental Protection Agency reports that reducing food waste could lead to significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, as food waste is a major contributor to methane emissions in landfills. By donating leftovers, not only do we feed the hungry, but we also protect our planet.

We urge major fast food chains to adopt policies that encourage donating excess food instead of discarding it. By working together, communities, businesses, and individuals can make strides in solving this pressing issue and set a precedent for sustainability and compassion.

Join us in this cause to transform potentially wasted resources into hope and sustenance. Sign this petition and make a stand against food waste and hunger. Together, we can make a difference.
