Protect the lives of children while preserving all of our rights as Americans
The Issue
As shown with the latest school shooting in Florida, our nations schools remain "soft targets" protected almost exclusively by signs, 1 maybe 2 armed police officers, and hope. The time has come to take affirmative action to stop these attacks from happening. When terrorists took guns, bombs and in the case of 9/11 box cutters onto airliners we as a society increased security at airports. We restricted access, we installed metal detectors, and we placed armed security at the gates. While its terrible to think our children might have to go to school "in a prison" or "armed camp" as I have heard it described, we as a society have to stop putting "feelings" ahead of actual security. Its an unpleasant thought but one that represents the reality that we all live in. There is no rational reason why we cannot make every school in the country secure. A true "safe space" for our children. Instead of banning this and that piece meal, why not proactively keep ALL threats out of our schools? A place that guns, knives, bombs, and drugs cannot penetrate. A place where an "active shooter won't make it 6 feet in the door before being confronted by armed people tasked with protecting the lives of all within. Why aren't the lives of our children worth this effort? The end result is a secure place for our children without having to take anything away from anyone except an easy target from those that wish to do harm.
