Pervis Payne is an innocent man that was at his girlfriend’s apartment waiting for her when an assault was taking place next door. He went to the neighbors’ apartment to help and when the police arrived he was convicted. Pervis Payne has an intellectual disability that caused him to remain in shock when he saw the scene of the attack and feared what was going to happen to him. He was arrested immediately and was accused of being under the influence. Although the officers working the case never tested DNA, Pervis Payne was convicted. He has spent 32 years on death row in Tennessee and has an execution date on April 9th 2021.
