Mr. Trump: Be a Role Model to children everywhere & STOP derogatory name-calling
The Issue
Sean Hepburn Ferrer, son of Audrey Hepburn, Honorary Ambassador of Everyone Matters and Humanitarian, joins HeathCliff Rothman, president of Everyone Matters, in asking Donald Trump to stop name-calling for the sake of children everywhere.
Dear Mr. Trump,
I am president of Everyone Matters, a global campaign honoring everyone’s individuality, that advocates for everyone’s right to be who they are, as they are, without being shamed, ridiculed or attacked. I am joined by Sean Hepburn Ferrer, an Honorary Ambassador of Everyone Matters. He is also Honorary Chair of the Audrey Hepburn Society at UNICEF, whose motto is, “Child First” and the Ambassador for Rare Diseases.
We collaborate with teachers in schools, with Mayors across the U.S., Canada and globally to honor each person’s personhood as an individual. We tell kids that name-calling is wrong, that labeling is demeaning, that each person is entitled to basic respect and dignity, as a human being.
While there is much in your platform that we don’t agree with, this request isn’t about politics.
We ask you to stop the name-calling. It’s as simple, and complex, as that. Words like 'loser', 'moron', 'dummy', 'crooked', 'lying', 'crazy' 'goofy,' are not acceptable.
Derogatory name-calling sets a bad example for kids, not to mention adults. As a public figure, you set by example. You give permission to bullies on the playground and workplace to demean and verbally abuse.
You say publicly that you deeply care about people. We ask you to care about moral fiber. Lead by example to the children of the world (and adults) that it’s not acceptable to be abusive, and a name-caller.
As a presidential candidate, you say you want to restore America’s greatness. Part of America’s greatness, and legacy to the world, has been the warmth and friendliness of its people, courtesy and helpfulness to neighbors and customers, kindness to strangers - without sugar-coating the lapses as well, of the past. Within that legacy, kids were taught courtesy and respect to others.
We don’t ask for blind respect to others who don’t warrant it, but at the same time, even if you disapprove of or are opposed to someone’s words or actions, that does not make name-calling or abusive words acceptable.
There’s already too much disrespect and verbal abuse in our culture, encouraged by the Internet’s anonymity, the click-needs of media sites, and the necessary freedoms of expression that sometimes cross boundaries, that is abusive, demeaning and derogatory.
An effective political strategy of name-calling to define opponents doesn’t justify any means to the end, of winning. If you enable others to be verbally abusive and demeaning, all of us lose.
Can you show true leadership as a candidate by announcing that you will suspend name-calling and personal slurs, that you were wrong to do so, and invite others to do the same?
Yours respectfully,
HeathCliff Rothman Sean Hepburn Ferrer,
President, Everyone Matters Ambassador, Everyone Matters
