President Trump - Pardon Edward Snowden
The Issue
In June 2013, journalists from The Guardian reported that the United States government was conducting mass surveillance on its own citizens. Whether guilty of crimes or not, the various American intelligence agencies agencies (NSA, CIA, etc.) were keeping tabs on citizens simply because they could. This type of activity was supposed to only be granted with court approval however a special, top secret, court was set up to approve these activities en masse (the FISA court). However, the court turned a blind eye to the liberty of everyday people and let this abuse of power go rampant. In fact on Sept 2, 2020, a US Federal court ruled that the mass surveillance done by these US Intelligence agencies was unconstitutional.
This revelation was made possible by a former employee and contractor for the federal government, Edward Snowden. He gave up a six figure salary and a life in Hawaii to expose what the government was doing to everyday, law abiding citizens. Furthermore, he was charged with a felony count of stealing government property and two more felony counts of violating the Espionage Act. If caught and convicted, he would most likely spend the rest of his life in prison. All because he exposed the truth about what our government was doing to us.
President Trump, please consider giving Edward Snowden a Presidential Pardon before leaving office. When looking at your legacy from a future date, I believe this will only help shed a positive light on your administration. Giving a deserving human being their liberty back is one of the noblest things you can do as someone in a position of power. Plus this will further distance yourself from some of the most troubling aspects of the prior two administrations.
Please SIGN and SHARE to encourage the pardoning of Edward Snowden. Note: this petition is nonpartisan. This is NOT about going after or supporting a certain political party. This is about giving justice to someone who sacrificed a lot so we could all become more knowledgeable and hold our government accountable. Before Snowden's revelations, it was a conspiracy to think that the government was spying on you. Now, it's accepted as a known fact. He changed the way the US Intelligence Community is viewed in our current lexicon. Instead of being punished, he should be rewarded.
Thank you so much for all of your help. Let's bring Edward Snowden home!
