Help Put a Stop to All Forms of Animal Cruelty in the United States

The Issue

Most animal protection laws are enacted and enforced at state level, and even though each of the 50 states now contains felony animal cruelty laws, farmer animals and animals used in laboratories are generally excluded from the states animal protection laws; in some contexts, wildlife are excluded from animal protection laws as well.
There are only a handful of federal animal cruelty and animal protection laws in the United States. Laws such as the Animal Welfare Act, to which set minimum standards for the “handling, care, treatment, and transportation” for animals mainly kept in zoos, commercially bred and sold, or used in laboratories; the 28-Hour Law, which requires transportation vehicles that are transporting certain animals for slaughter to stop every 28 hours to gives the animals exercise, food and water; the Humane Slaughter Act, which requires that animals be stunned into unconsciousness before slaughter to prevent or minimize pain; and the PACT Act ( Preventing Animal Cruelty and Torture), which makes crushing, suffocating, burning, drowning, impaling or sexual exploitation a federal crime. There are also a handful of laws who are managed at the state-level.
Yes, with every new animal protection law added to list, people who care about the welfare and safety of animals in the United States get one step closer to ending animals abuse in the country. But are they protecting the innocent, injustice ridden animals that we care about so much? With every law that was listed up above, animals such as chickens, turkeys and other birds are not excluded from the abuse, although the feel pain just as much as any other animal. They are considered exempt by the federal government in the 28-Hour Law and the Humane Slaughter Act. Even with AWA (Animal Welfare Act), events such as dogfighting and cockfighting still take place in the United States.
All of these laws, and the Department of Agriculture, are frequently criticized for allowing inhumane practices to continue and go unchecked.
Animal cruelty and abuse takes place every day in all places, not just in the world of industrial animal agriculture. It might be happening right next door in your neighbor’s house, at a popular venue in your city, or at a lab near where you work. You’ve likely encountered and seen many stray animals throughout the course of your life — animals who were once someone’s loyal companion left to fend for themselves in a big, unforgiving world.
All we ask for from the President of the United States and his Secretary of Agriculture, Sonny Perdue, is to please update these laws and please add ALL forms of livestock and farm animals into the laws. Animals are sentient creatures who deserve our love and protection, and as long as neglect goes on in the United States government, nothing will get done. The immense care for these animals becomes stronger and stronger every day. Please, sign this petition if you would like the government to put a stop to the use of animals in laboratories and to stop neglecting their duties in animal protection and start doing more to protect these animals from abuse and inhumane actions.
