Banning the Sales and Usage of Chain and Choke Collars for Dogs

The Issue

Chain and Choke collars. Those metal pronged collars you see at the pet store? Yeah, those ones. They cause injuries to the trachea and esophagus, injuries to the blood vessels in eyes, nerve damage, neck sprains, death, and more. They cause injuries to the skin-stab wounds that bleed and get infected, ripped open skin that is sore with every movement. According to the American Kennel Club, "Steer clear of corrective collars like choke collars and prong collars. They can cause neck injury, pain, and even strangulation." Furthermore, according to PETA "The use of choke collars has been associated with whiplash, fainting, spinal cord injuries leading to paralysis, crushing of the trachea with partial or complete asphyxiation, crushing and/or fracture of the bones in the larynx, dislocated neck bones, bruising of the esophagus, bruising and damage to the skin and tissues in the neck, brain damage and prolapsed eyes caused by sharp increases in pressure in the head, and other injuries." The metal spikes of chain collars cause scratches and puncture wounds. Overtimes, this leads to the build up of scar tissue, which has no feeling. This leads dogs to become desensitized to the pain of these collars, so they continue to pull on their leashes while on walks, causing walks to be even more difficult. In addition, this negative and violent reinforcement actually causes dogs to act out more, often becoming aggressive. If chain and choke collars are banned, it will be a win for humanity and the compassionate treatment of animals. Dogs will be able to get trained in effective and kind ways that will cause them to learn good behavior. We can use positive reinforcement methods to teach our dogs good behavior. These methods lead to dogs who are well adjusted to their environment and non violent. Positive Training-Victoria Stilwell Positive reinforcement- American Kennel Club
