Americans For Alexei Navalny
The Issue
On August 20, 2020, Russian opposition figure and anti-corruption activist, Alexei Navalny, was poisoned with a Novichok nerve agent and was hospitalized in a serious condition. During a flight from Tomsk to Moscow, he became violently ill and was taken to a hospital in Omsk after an emergency landing there, and put in a coma. He was evacuated to the Charite hospital in Berlin, Germany, two days later. The use of the nerve agent was confirmed by five Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) certified laboratories.
On December 22, 2020, the research group Bellingcar revealed details of a 45-minute phone call between Navalny, who posed as an agent for Russia's National Security Council, and the alleged Kremlin agent, Konstantin Kudryavtsev. Navalny coaxed details of the attack from Kudryavtsev, who said the nerve agent Novichok was applied to the politician's underwear. Kudryavstev was one of the agents who was part of an elite team dispatched by Putin and the Kremlin to poison and ultimately assassinate Navalny while he visited the Russian city of Tomsk in August, according to a joint investigation by the research group Bellingcat, CNN, Russian media outlet, The Insider, and German weekly, Der Spiegel. The plan failed when Navalny survived the attack.
On January 17, 2021 Navalny attempted to return to his home in Russia. Before Navalny's passport could even be stamped at Moscow's Sheremetyevo Alexander S. Pushkin International Airport, police officers detained him on fabricated claims of embezzlement. Navalny and the European Court of Human Rights have previously called those claims a political prosecution.
Americans have a lot going on right now. But we cannot stand by and allow a man, fighting for the freedom of his county, to be silenced by the same exact enemy who has meddled with our own freedom and elections- PUTIN. Americans must show their support for Navalny and condemn Putin's heinous actions and attempts to suppress free speech.
We demand Congress to condemn Russia for the poisoning of Alexei Navalny and codify sanctions against Russia.
