Don't the LPU Law Gate Area Residents (Students) have Human Rights?
The Issue
LPU Law Gate area of Maheru near Lovely Professional University is a residential address of approximately 10000 students, who opt for accomodation outside the Lovely Professional University due to personal reasons.
The said area is cash cow for the Punjab Government and its various departments like Jalandhar Development Authority, Punjab State Power Corporation Limited, and Punjab Police just to name a few.
Punjab Government charges crores of rupees from the building owners through its departments in the name of various facilities. But, the ground reality is that this area can be named as "hell."
There are no roads to walk on. There is no sewerage system, and the sewer water keeps flowing in streets making the residents vulnurable to various diseases. There are no street lights. There is no safety in the area, and thefts are quite frequent in this area. Jalandhar Development Authority charges hefty sum from this area in the name of sanctioning of building plans, and other factors. The area gets black-out every now and then. The electricity infrastructure is in bad shape. Voltage fluctuates every single day. Electrical euipments get burn out and inverters fail every day. Even in winter season, there are black outs and power cuts every single day. All the complaints and requests to the concerned authorities fell on deaf ears. No department has any plan for this area other than collecting money from the building owners.
The most affected are students, who live here. They have come from far flung places for their studies. But, the environment here is affecting them physically, and mentally.
So, my question is that
Don't these students have any human rights, so that they can live with dignity and study here with peace of mind, and could achieve what they are here for?
If they have human rights, Punjab Govt must intervene immediately, and direct its departments to develop this area fully, and make it livable for humans.
Thanks for reading.
