Don’t Spray Me, Bro! A Grassroots Movement to Stop Pesticides on Playgrounds and Fields
The Issue
Muddy Knees, Not Chemical Exposures
When we send our children out to play on neighborhood playgrounds and sports fields, we picture them building friendships, scraping their knees, and breathing in the fresh air. What we don’t picture—and what no parent should ever have to worry about—is our children playing in an invisible field of synthetic poisons.
Across public parks, soccer fields, and playgrounds nationwide, broad-spectrum weed killers are routinely sprayed to keep the turf looking perfectly manicured. The most notorious of these, glyphosate, is a powerful herbicide designed to obliterate any plant in its path. But the cost of this “perfect” cosmetic aesthetic is far too high, and our children are paying the price.
We are launching this petition to call for a nationwide shift away from synthetic pesticides and herbicides on all public play spaces and sports fields. We don’t need synthetic chemicals to keep our public spaces beautiful. We need community.
Why Our Children Are at Risk
Children are not just miniature adults; their bodies are beautifully complex, rapidly growing, and incredibly vulnerable. Because they play close to the ground, roll in the grass, and constantly put their fingers in their mouths, their exposure to soil-bound chemicals is exponentially higher than ours. Furthermore, their developing organs and natural detoxification pathways are simply not equipped to filter out harsh synthetic toxins.
Decades of independent scientific research, including findings from the World Health Organization, classify glyphosate as a “probable human carcinogen.” When our children run on treated grass or touch playground equipment where pesticide residues linger, they face serious potential health risks:
Cellular and Genetic Damage: Research continues to link glyphosate and its toxic breakdown products to elevated risks of serious illnesses later in life, including kidney disease, fatty liver disease, and childhood cancers like leukemia.
Hormone Disruption: Glyphosate acts as an endocrine disruptor, interfering with crucial hormonal signals that guide brain and reproductive system development.
Asthma and Allergies: Inhaling chemical vapors or coming into contact with sprayed turf is a known trigger for acute respiratory distress and severe skin irritation in young children.
A playground should be a sanctuary—the safest place in our neighborhoods—not a source of chemical anxiety.
The Vision: Pick a Weed, Pull Some Grass, Save a Life!
Instead of relying on toxic chemical applications, it is time for a national shift toward a simple, powerful, grassroots philosophy.
This isn’t about expensive city contracts or heavy-handed top-down mandates; it’s about communities stepping up to protect their own. We are calling on towns, cities, school districts, and neighborhoods across the country to reject the chemical spray tanks and embrace organic, hand-managed turf.
The concept is beautifully simple: Pick a weed, pull some grass, and save a life.
We are challenging local parents, coaches, neighbors, and park-lovers everywhere to organize their own local grassroots efforts. (Yes, you’ve got to get them at the grass roots!) By taking matters into our own hands—literally—each community can formulate its own volunteer schedule, grab some gardening gloves, and manually keep local fields clean and safe. It is a powerful, active way to teach our kids about ecological stewardship while protecting their health.
