Don't Shrink the Lawrence Pool! Fix It!

Don't Shrink the Lawrence Pool! Fix It!
The Issue
Don’t Shrink Our Pool! Fix It!
We petition the Lawrence City Commission to make the following changes to their decision for renovations of the Lawrence Outdoor Aquatic Center:
1. Do not reduce the square footage of our outdoor pool.
2. Do not remove the long course lap lanes in our outdoor pool.
3. Fix the pool bathhouses.
4. Rebuild the shallow pool separate from the main pool.
5. Perform any additional required maintenance on the existing pool.
If there are funds and space left after the five points above are met, consider the addition of a lazy river. A new design for this recreational feature would be required so it would not disturb the current pool shape.
Why We Need a Different Plan for Our Pool
Pool Size
On August 13, the City Commission approved a plan to eliminate more than a quarter of the total water area in our pool, including more than half of our open swim space! We do not want a smaller pool!
This plan would remove 4800 ft2 of our main large, open swimming area north of the lap lanes (in red). Right now, we have about 8100 ft2 of total open swim space (3’ 6” – 5’ deep). The new arrangement, with four lap lanes in place, would only give us 3800 ft2 of open water for swimming (in blue), less than half of what we currently have!
We think that the City Commission was forced into this decision because of the limited options they were given. All three pool renovation proposals presented to them were expensive AND eliminated much of our open swim space!
Pool Usage
Our outdoor pool is exceptionally well used!
During public hours, the pool is often packed. Schools and Boys and Girls Club bring droves of kids to the pool during the summer weekdays. Weekends and hot days are packed. The lap lanes are almost always full, with two people per lane.
During lap swim hours, the lap lanes are brimming with exercisers, from 6:30 in the morning until 7:00 at night. When swim teams practice, 7-8 swimmers cram into one lane to practice together.
Value of Our Pool
Our outdoor pool is a remarkable public resource and community gathering place where young and old come together for recreation, exercise, outdoor time, family time, and social connection. For the sake of our community, families, children, exercisers, swim teams, and those who need a cool place to land during the summer
