Whovians of the world unite! Don't permit BBC to rob us of yet another year of Dr Who!
The issue
One of the highest regarded and most popular television series to ever be broadcast. Dr Who boasts a massive fan base made up of literally millions of Whovians around the globe, it is the only fan base in the world that can match the level and intensity of the 'Trekkie' fan universe. Despite this BBC Worldwide recently decided not to air any regular episodes in 2016, pushing the release of season 10 back to 2017.
Whovians are devout fans of this fantastic program and the universe it postulates, their dedication knows no bounds. When BBC brought Dr Who back into our lives again in 2005 it united millions of classic Whovians with a new generation of fans to produce a show of outstanding quality for almost a decade.
These fans have come together in recent years to create their own Dr Who fan fiction to fill the void left during the 10 month period in which BBC takes each year to film a 14 episode season. While this has spawned many creative formats and new universes, the void between BBC's episodes has been growing larger.
After the shows reinstatement in 2005 the number of months between small blocks of episodes began to grow, the largest gap being the period between David Tenant and Matt Smith which saw no regular episodes broadcast in 2009 at all. The proposed changes by BBC to this season will spawn a gap between the last episode of season 9, 5th December 2015 until at least March of 2017 a period of 16 months. Many classic Doctor Who fans waited patiently for over 15 years for their show to return to the air in 2005, many of these fans will not make it to see another episode if it isn't released until 2017.
Given the massive fan base and enormous success of the show both in the UK and abroad, How can you justify simply cancelling an entire year of a show, and not expect a reaction from this fan base? We all know it's not a lack of funding, every episode and season are put on sale months before their release date, THIS SHOW PAYS FOR ITSELF before it's even broadcast.
We are asking no more than what is standard for most television programming around the world, 'a regular season, delivered each year'.
Plan Currently in place by BBC Worldwide
Filming begins May 2016
Next special to broadcast - 2016 Xmas Special 25th December 2016
Next regular episode/season - Unspecified 2017 Date TBC
Amended Schedule Requests
Filming as Planned by BBC - May 2016
Xmas Special 2016 as planned
Regular Season / Part Season to be broadcast in 2016
Whovians of the world unite and demand the same schedule given to all other programming 'a regular season, delivered each year' .
This multi award winning and record breaking show has a massive influence potential to lead not just the entertainment industry but also to shape our society for the better. BBC Worldwide wisely chose to reopen the gates to the Whoniverse bringing joy to millions and and infusing their business with new wealth. By signing this petition you will be sending a message to BBC Worldwide that while their programming has been excellent, depriving the world of Dr Who for over a year hurts not only the dedicated Whovians but BBC’s bottom line.
