Toronto Wants to Tell you How Many Guinea Pigs You Can Own

The Issue

Are you aware that the city of Toronto is proposing changes to its bylaw that may negatively affect animals?

One such change they are considering is as follows:

"City staff will be examining the existing rules around the sale of rabbits and guinea pigs, as well as the ownership of rabbits, guinea pigs and pigeons, and exploring bylaw changes, such as limiting the number that are permitted to be owned in a single household."

While there should be better rules regarding the sale of guinea pigs in pet stores (e.g. they should not be housed in small aquariums), limiting the number an individual can own is concerning.  What are they going to decide is the appropriate number of guinea pigs that a person can own in a single household?  Hoarding many guinea pigs is not best (this is what occurs with mass breeders) since they more than likely, are not getting the care they deserve. However, telling individuals they can only own a few for example, is unjust and not in the best interest of guinea pigs.

Guinea pigs (of the Cavy species) are herd animals who are extremely sociable and are negatively affected if they do not have same species companionship.  A responsible owner can easily manage two or more guinea pigs.

Switzerland, having the best interest of animals in mind, actually has a law that prohibits the ownership of only one guinea pig.

Guinea pigs are amazing pets and incredibly smart.  They understand words and have multiple ways of communicating with each other and their humans.  They develop incredible bonds.  They can exhibit signs of grief when separated and signs of pure joy when reunited!

Unfortunately a lot of people have so many misconceptions about them.  The City of Toronto needs to be educated on the value of guinea pigs and the rewards they bring to the lives of the individuals who own them.

Please sign this petition and show your support.  Help me inform the city that regulating the number of guinea pigs an individual household can own is unwarranted.  It is over-regulation and people should be allowed to make the best decisions for themselves and the animals they love.
