Don’t Let Big Tech Dominate AI Oversight in Utah

Don’t Let Big Tech Dominate AI Oversight in Utah
The Issue
Utah and North Carolina just launched a new task force to oversee artificial intelligence, with support from tech giants like OpenAI and Microsoft. According to officials, its goal is to prevent AI from being used to harm the public, especially children. But there’s one big problem: the people most vulnerable to AI abuse aren’t being invited to the table.
This task force is being shaped by tech companies with a vested interest in the outcome. There’s no public record of child safety experts, civil rights leaders, or data privacy advocates being included in the decision-making process. That’s unacceptable. If this effort is truly about protecting us, then families, consumer watchdogs, and marginalized communities deserve a real voice—not just a press release.
AI tools are already being used to manipulate children’s voices, spread disinformation that targets communities of color, and harvest personal data without consent. These risks are real and growing. We cannot rely on tech insiders to police themselves. The task force must include independent experts who understand how AI is impacting real people on the ground.
We’re calling on Utah Attorney General Derek Brown to formally expand the task force to include advocates from child welfare, civil rights, disability rights, and digital privacy organizations. Not just as consultants, but as decision-making members who help shape the rules from the inside.
This is a critical moment. AI will touch every aspect of our lives, from how we learn and work to how we stay safe online. It’s not enough to talk about protecting the vulnerable—we must make sure they’re included in the process. Sign now to demand a seat at the table for the communities that need protection the most.
