For generations, Catholics in Charlotte have found deep reverence, beauty, and connection to God through sacred traditions in the Mass — from Latin chant to kneeling for Communion at altar rails.

Now, those traditions are under threat.

A leaked draft from Bishop Michael Martin proposes sweeping changes that would ban Latin, remove altar rails, restrict traditional prayers, and even dictate what women can wear while serving. These changes could erase cherished expressions of faith from parishes across the diocese.

Many of us — young and old, cradle Catholics and converts — find spiritual nourishment in these practices. They are not divisive. They are part of the Church’s living heritage.

We urge Bishop Martin to listen to the faithful of Charlotte before moving forward with any changes. The Catholic Mass should not be stripped of its richness and sacred depth.

Don’t silence our tradition. Don’t take away what helps us draw closer to Christ.
