Don't dump on Granville County, North Carolina

The Issue

Stop the Granville County Commissioners from tripling the waste collected from outside the county and dumping it at the Oxford Municipal Solid Waste landfill.

Request for Proposals #23-316 seeks proposals for "contract operations at the Oxford MSW landfill for the County's waste stream (currently approximately 50,000 tons annually) plus tonnage increments up to an additional 100,000 tons annually to be solicited by County."

Why tripling the waste dumped at the Oxford Landfill is a bad idea:

  1. Most of the increased waste stream would come from outside of Granville County.
  2. The Oxford landfill is a precious public resource and should be reserved for Granville County residents.
  3. The Oxford landfill currently only has about 90 years of capacity left; tripling the garbage dumped there will reduce its life by about 60 years.
  4. Once the Oxford landfill is filled to capacity, a new landfill will be hard to get approved and expensive to build.
  5. More trash dumped at Oxford means more heavy truck traffic on our roads.
  6. When Granville County accepts other counties' waste, Granville County also accepts other counties' environmental and health risks. If the out-of-county trash has the forever chemical compound known as PFAS (polyfluoroalkyl substances), then Granville County has to pay to clean that up before it gets into the water, soil, air, and fish.
  7. The risks outweigh the financial benefits. For example, if PFAS does find its way into the landfill, the estimated cost to clean it up could be in the millions.

Please sign the petition to let the Granville County Commissioners know you support preserving the Oxford landfill for Granville County residents and not for other counties' trash.

Please leave a comment, call, and/or email your county commissioner.
