Don't Deny Thousands of Haitians Temporary Protected Status

Don't Deny Thousands of Haitians Temporary Protected Status

The Issue

After the catastrophic earthquake that spurred a crisis in their home country, undocumented Haitians living in the United States were granted the opportunity for Temporary Protected Status. For 18 months, TPS allows Haitians who arrived prior to the earthquake to work and send remittances to Haiti that are critical to recovery efforts.

Currently, there is a deadline of July 20th for Haitians to apply for this protection. Due to high application fees, and challenges in community outreach and translation, only a portion of those eligible have applied. Haitian community workers and immigration lawyers have come forward and asked the Department of Homeland Security for an extension of the deadline. An extension would allow these community advocates more time to address these challenges, and ensure that thousands of eligible Haitians aren’t left out of TPS.

Tell DHS that no Haitian in the United States should be left out of the opportunity to work and help their loved ones.
