Don’t Cut Fleet Week Funding in San Francisco

Don’t Cut Fleet Week Funding in San Francisco
The Issue
Fleet Week is one of San Francisco’s most iconic and unifying events. Every fall, thousands of residents and visitors gather across rooftops, parks, and waterfronts to watch the Blue Angels soar over the Bay. The event brings over $10 million into the local economy, honors military service, and creates a rare sense of shared civic pride.
But now, part of that tradition is at risk.
San Francisco’s Department of Emergency Management has proposed cutting its $100,000 annual contribution to Fleet Week as part of broader city budget reductions. That funding supports the disaster preparedness and public safety exercises that take place during the event. These exercises help local first responders coordinate with the Department of Defense and improve the city’s emergency readiness.
Fleet Week will not be canceled entirely if the funding is cut. The Blue Angels are still expected to perform, and the San Francisco Fleet Week Association is working to raise private funds. However, without city support, critical safety components of the event could be reduced or eliminated. Public safety, logistics, and long-term sustainability are all at stake.
This is not just about planes in the sky. It is about investing in preparedness, supporting local businesses, and keeping a deeply valued tradition alive for the people who call this city home.
We understand San Francisco is facing a budget crisis, but cutting support for an event that benefits the economy, the community, and public safety is not the solution.
Sign this petition to urge Mayor Daniel Lurie and the Board of Supervisors to preserve Fleet Week funding in the city budget.
