Don’t Cancel Haunting Adeline: Support Survivor Voices and Adult Choice
The Issue
🎬 ALLOW THE HAUNTING ADELINE MOVIE TO MOVE FORWARD
🖤 Protect Survivor Voices, Artistic Freedom, and the Right of Adults to Choose Their Own Entertainment
📢 A petition has been created demanding that the production of the Haunting Adeline movie be stopped because of its depiction of stalking, sexual violence, coercion, and trauma.
🎥 We are asking that the adaptation be allowed to move forward.
🖤 H.D. Carlton has publicly shared that she is a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, rape, and domestic violence. ✍️ She has also explained that Haunting Adeline was written as a way to cope with her own trauma.
🔇 Silencing this story does not protect every survivor. 🥀 It silences the way one survivor chose to process, express, and reclaim her experiences.
🫶 Survivors are not a monolith. ⚠️ Some may find this story painful or triggering, and they have every right to avoid it, criticize it, or decide that it should not be part of their healing journey. 🕯️ Other survivors have found strength, comfort, understanding, or a sense of control through dark fiction.
⚖️ Both experiences are valid.
🚫 One survivor’s discomfort should not be used to erase another survivor’s voice.
📖 Dark fiction is not an instruction manual. 🩸 Depicting disturbing behavior does not automatically endorse that behavior, just as horror movies do not endorse murder and crime dramas do not endorse criminal activity. 🧠 Adults are capable of distinguishing fictional fantasy from acceptable real-life conduct.
🚪 No one should be pressured to read this book or watch its adaptation. 🔞 However, adults who understand its subject matter should retain the right to make that choice for themselves.
🛡️ Rather than canceling the production, we support responsible safeguards, including:
• A strict age rating
• Detailed and accessible content warnings
• Responsible marketing that clearly identifies the story as dark fiction
• Resources for viewers who may be affected by its themes
• Respect for anyone who chooses not to watch
🗣️ The solution to difficult art is not censorship. 🔍 The solution is information, personal choice, responsible distribution, and open discussion.
⛓️ Canceling this movie would establish a troubling precedent in which stories created from trauma can be erased whenever their portrayal of healing, sexuality, fear, or fantasy makes others uncomfortable.
🎬 We respectfully ask the filmmakers, producers, distributors, and streaming platforms involved to continue with the production of Haunting Adeline while maintaining strong viewer protections.
🖤 Let survivors tell their stories.
🕊️ Adults need to decide what they consume.
🥀 Allow dark fiction remain fiction.
📚 Throughout history, people have condemned books, newspapers, films, and other forms of storytelling because they feared the ideas within them but discomfort has never been a valid reason to silence art.
✍️ Sign this petition to support the production of the Haunting Adeline adaptation, survivor autonomy, artistic freedom, and informed adult choice.
