Don’t bother

The Issue

I am withdrawing my assistance and involvement with Sunrise Rollerland after being prohibited from rollerskating there solely due to a Yelp review I posted. This action was taken in response to my expressed opinion and constitutes an infringement on my freedom of speech. I believe constructive feedback should not result in exclusion or retaliation, and I can no longer support or participate in an environment that penalizes individuals for sharing their honest experiences.

I am saddened to have spent so much time attempting to assist a community treasure that really does not care about the inclusivity of their community.

There are a few challenges with this idea. The first is that the City of Citrus Heights does not have its own Parks and Recreation Department. Instead, those services are managed by Sacramento County, which oversees approximately 50 parks—26 of which are located within the city limits. That said, the idea does have merit and is certainly worth consideration. However, it’s important to note that government processes tend to move slowly, particularly when it comes to the allocation and use of public funds. For example, the City recently purchased property for our animal services department, and that process took five months to complete—and that was just a straightforward real estate transaction. Because this is a business matter, a full assessment would be required. This means the City would need to issue a Request for Proposals (RFP) to hire a consultant who could evaluate all aspects of the potential acquisition. That step alone could take a minimum of 30 days. And that’s just one part of a much longer process before the City Council could even consider making a decision. In contrast, private buyers are not limited by the same procedural requirements. It’s highly likely that a private party could acquire the business well before the City would be in a position to act. Finally, for the City to consider this seriously, I would need to see at least 1,000 signatures from verified Citrus Heights voters—after all, it’s their tax dollars at stake. For context, there are approximately 40,000 registered voters in Citrus Heights. Warm Regards, Tim Schaefer Councilmember, District 3, City of Citrus Heights
