Save Tower 7, Tower 12 all Doheny State Beach Tower original numbers

Save Tower 7, Tower 12 all Doheny State Beach Tower original numbers
The Issue
We need your help! Our Doheny State beach / Hole in the Fence Lifeguard Towers numbers are at risk of being gone forever. Recently a decision was made by one person to change our iconic Tower numbers. The individual was not aware of the history or the importance these towers mean to our community nor the safety aspect they represent. Towers 7-12 have been changed to 32-38.
Change is inevitable yet not all change is necessary. The original Tower numbers will always remind us of home, community, family and friends. While First responders and boaters have the old numbers cemented in the memories. When Tower 7, 12 or any of the old numbers are called out there is no question nor delay as to the location.
While this campaign started out on emotion it has become very evident that our community also has strong safety concerns. Minutes can matter matter as there have already been some delays in responding over confusion with the new numbers.
Doheny State Beach was given the land by Edward Doheny creating the first ever California State Beach.
The first Lifeguard at Doheny was water man Pop Proctor. The first Lifeguard Tower was Pops Tower. Over time this Tower was given the number 12. Tower 12 is rich with surf history and marked the beginning of a local hotspot where some of the greats cut their teeth and developed the surf technology we see today.
April Kailani has suggested that if we can get the original numbers back she will start the process of a remembrance plaque in memory of Pops Proctor. surfing great waves
So if you remember surfing great waves with friends and family, bon fires, and 4th of July gatherings then please sign and share!
This petition will not be used for ads or financial gain. Please go to the Save Tower 7 Facebook page and share share share.
The state parks official statement said this is a pilot program. With enough signatures, life stories and aloha we can get our old numbers back.
The City of Dana Point is also behind this campaign and several have already signed the petition. More to come on that. Also the Orange County Register did a nice story in the Feb 5th edition.
If you don't feel comfortable with the online petition please stop by either Killer Dana Surf Shop location and sign the paper version and grab your free stickers.
So please be a part of conserving the surfing history at Doheny State Beach, our surrounding beach cities and the wonderful City of Dana Point! The true surf city!!
Thank you!
