Dogs Dying or Mauled – Enforce The Laws!

On the 20 February 2021 a loved family pet “Peg” (owned by Mr & Mrs Carvolth) was attacked in her own yard by the neighbourhood dogs who had broken through the fence.

Surgery was performed the day of the attack, Peg was then rushed to the vets again on 22 February as her condition worsened. Peg was unable to be saved and sadly passed away after suffering horrific injuries.

The dogs’ owner paid the vet bills in relation to her dogs’ attack on Peg but it was little restitution for the loss that Mr & Mrs Carvolth had endured.

Following the incident, complaints were made to the Townsville City Council, Local Mayor, and the Queensland Ombudsman.

On the conclusion of the Ombudsman’s investigation the following was identified:

Council’s internal review after this finding recommended reconsideration of making a regulated dog declaration in respect of the offending dog.

In reference to the correspondence received from the Queensland Ombudsman’s office a council officer attended the property to serve documents and was advised the offending dog had been relocated outside of the local government area.

Although council was open to make a regulated dog declaration under s 89(5) of the Animal Management Act council advised it is satisfied with the assurance that the offending dog would not be returned to the area and didn’t consider it necessary to proceed.

The two remaining dogs involved in the attack and killing of Peg remained on the property and a new fence was installed between the properties.

Mr & Mrs Carvolth decided to rehome a rescue dog after their loss (Pedro) and on 25 January 2023 Townsville Animal Management Control contacted Mr & Mrs Carvolth in relation to an attack on their new dog Pedro, for which they required access to their yard to remove the offending dogs from the premises.

On the Carvolth’s arrival at the property the neighbouring dogs that were involved in the death of Peg were in the yard, having dug under the new fence to gain access and attack Pedro. Pedro’s life now hangs in the balance after two surgeries.

Townsville City Council Current Local Laws indicate on their website under the Local Law 2 – Animal Management 2011 (b) that it protects the community against risks to health and safety, with these two brutal attacks within our own yard by neighbouring dogs the Carvolth’s are in fear of further attacks to Pedro and themselves from these vicious dogs.

We are petitioning for change – “Dogs Dying or Mauled – Enforce The Laws!”  So, we don’t have to live in fear.
